Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn director Naoki Yoshida has been confirmed as the newest instalment's producer. Not only that, but the trailer flashed up the logo of the prosaically named Creative Business Unit III - the Square-Enix department responsible for the MMO's successful relaunch.

This is good news. It's fair to say that Square-Enix's second attempt at an online Final Fantasy was a bit of a shambles its original incarnation, both legitimately broken and fundamentally flawed. Indeed, it was such a sorry mess that the company revised their whole financial projection for the year of its release down by 90%, and it was heading straight for the scrapheap before Yoshida, like an MMO firefighter, parachuted in to rescue the whole project.

Final Fantasy XIV has went from strength to strength since it re-launched in 2013, and is today one of the most popular MMOs going. Having Yoshida and his team helming the next main game in the series is both a just reward for his recent endeavours, and a reason for Final Fantasy fans to grow very excited indeed.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
