Final Fantasy 16: Every Confirmed And Leaked Detail We Know

3. Fan-Favourite Summons Return

As Final Fantasy has gradually moved away from its fundamentals of excellent storytelling and engaging gameplay, the series has come to rely on its historical artefacts as connective tissue. That means chocobos, moogles, three recurrent musical motifs, and of course, the most eye-catching of all, screen-shaking summons.

As mentioned previously, these newly re-christened Eikons are set to be a major part of Final Fantasy XVI's plot, much as they were in FFVI ('espers') and FFX ('aeons'). We already know about Phoenix, the flame of rebirth linked to Joshua, but which other massive mountains of magic can we expect to see?

There was mention of 'Shiva's Dominant' in the trailer, and we got a glimpse of the ice queen's Diamond Dust in action. She looks exactly as you'd expect: a big, cold, glimmering woman. There was also a shot of a gargantuan rock bloke - almost definitely Titan.

In the closing shot, Phoenix squared off with the "other fire Eikon" Ifrit - whose physiognomy heavily resembles his Final Fantasy XIV appearance, now with crumbling, molten flesh like igneous rock. Indeed, the game's logo depicts the pair having a blazing row.

Given they're such a crucial aspect of the plot, we can probably expect a few more familiar Eikons to show their huge, gnarly faces. However, like in the last few games, their utility in battle will probably be limited to the occasion set-piece, such is their colossal, overpowered nature. You can't exactly summon an actual world-eating God every five minutes to see off an imp, can you?

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
