1. It Didn't Quite Live Up To The Hype

Regardless of whether you think Fallout 4 is a great, terrible, or even just ok game, there is no denying that Bethesda didn't quite manage to meet the lofty expectations they set for fans.

With Fallout 4, Bethesda clearly wanted to appeal to those outside the traditional RPG genre that had helped bring the series so much success in the past. While this isn't necessarily a bad idea - the world of Fallout has significant mainstream appeal - Bethesda approach meant they created a game that covered many genres but failed to excel in any of them.

The traditional role-playing elements are heavily undermined by the stilted dialogue system that failed to give the player enough meaningful input on the world, while the average shooting mechanics and lack of intense shootouts meant it failed to appeal to more casual shooter fans. Furthermore, the attempts to give those into survival games something resulted in a base-building sideshow that while complex, provided little value outside of eye-candy.

It's a shame, as Fallout 4 shows Bethesda at its very best, with the atmospheric and story-rich open world along with the excellent crafting system standing out as the game's highlights. Ultimately, its shortcomings mean that while Fallout 4 should be remembered as a great game, it falls short of what gamers were expecting from Bethesda's latest offering in the series.
