5. Directors Of Football Are An Irrelevance
On the subject of staff incompetence, I ask you in FM's world, what is the point of the Director of Football? In their current form, they're an ill-thought-out stab at realism. Don't get me wrong, I love it when Sports Interactive try to enhance the real-life illusion, but the problem as it stands is that at the moment, they're something of an appendix. If anything, it's all a bit backward. First of all, you decide if you want a DoF, and then you go out and hire the one you want. All this seems to be a massive inversion of what the post actually involves in real-life, where the role is much more separate-but-equal to the manager, or even above him. After all, If managers could just sack their the DoF, then Alan Pardew would've disposed with Joe Kinnear's incompetent arse many moons ago. Secondly, you can do everything better than them I've lost track of the amount of times I've had to stop my DoF over-spending on a terrible player, getting an awful deal for an unwanted player or loaning out a prodigy to some backwater club not worth his time. As befitting your strangely empowered position, you just end up taking responsibility back off them before realising signing one in was a failed experiment. I understand what SI were trying to do again, they were doffing their cap toward the real world by including the post, but it's hard to fit it into a game experience which empowers you as the centre of that virtual world. Yet in my opinion, having the Director of Football as a separate entity you can't control is hardly a bad thing. If anything, it makes it a lot more like real life, and what is FM, if not a simulator?
