Football Manager 2014 Handheld: 12 Essential Signings You Must Make
Football Manager 2014 Handheld has now been released, and despite some misgivings that stripping down the game is something of a betrayal from some quarters, it is a triumph of the format. The game melds SI's usual eye for detail with an entertaining interface and a simplified version of the incredibly good full-game that crucially doesn't feel like it's been too diluted. Naturally there are some compromises on what your mobile system can take, but there's no sense that SI have broken their game in order to fit the limitations of a medium. Everything is done cleverly, and rather than a reduced game, you get a different game experience that sits alongside the full game, and extends the opportunity for addicted players to take their managerial careers onto their commutes (and dare I say it, to the toilet.) Naturally, as with any FM release, attention quickly turns to the best players available, and having now spent a good few seasons in the game, I've come up with a list of essential signings for the first two seasons. The transfer budgets are a lot more friendly than in the full version (as an indicator, Newcastle start the first season with more than £12m and get £25m the next year,) because the stripping out of the more intricate gameplay elements makes the transfer system feel both more important and more like an entertainment element.
