4. More Distinct Managers
Media Image LtdIf you're a marathon FM player (and all the best people are), you know that nothing ever stands still in your footballing parallel universe. Jobs change hands, folk get transferred, and if you leave it long enough, Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the manager of Scunthorpe. There's no problem here bearing in mind 12 managers received their marching orders in the Premier League last season, it proves FM is nothing if not realistic. Yet there comes a time in every FM player's life when he looks up and finds everything has changed, and worse yet, he didn't even realise it. Barring a choice few, just about every job in the division has changed hands, and you're all sorts of baffled to find that not only is Thomas Schaaf managing Manchester City, he's been at it for four years. The reason for this obliviousness? It's quite simple managers simply aren't distinctive enough in their personalities to warrant being remembered. Perhaps we can put this down to the limited, binary set of responses a manager can give regarding another manager. After all, if everyone's singing off the same hymn sheet, any sort of difference quickly falls by the wayside. Quite frankly, this is a crying shame the gilet-wearing, perma-furious Tim Sherwood isn't the urbane, shrewish Arsene Wenger, so they shouldn't be alike on the game. To have these nuances batted down for ease of use simply smacks of missed opportunity.
