Heard the one about the third tier Russian side who can only field youth products?

With the new iteration of Sports Interactive's popular football management sim releasing imminently, now is the perfect time to start thinking about the team that you will manage for your first save.

Some will likely just manage their supported team (and that's fine!), though there are many FM players who will be looking for something a little different or challenging.

This year's iteration of the game includes some really great opportunities for interesting saves, as there are a number of European giants on the brink of financial turmoil, as well as a certain historic Tyneside club in the Premier League that have just received a financial windfall so big it likely brought a tear to Manchester City's eyes.

These types of save are usually reserved for mods or custom databases, but in this year's FM there truly is something for everyone. So, let's take a look at ten teams who could make for interesting saves when Football Manager 2022 launches.

10. Newcastle United

Let's get the obvious one out of the way first.

With Newcastle United’s takeover by a fund backed by the Saudi Arabian government, it’s pretty safe to say that, from a purely footballing standpoint, things are looking bright for the Tyneside club.

Before the takeover, it was often predicted that the club would be fighting to remain in the Premier League, which in real-life could still well be the case. However, in Football Manager the new owners will be running the club from day one, which means the money will be there from the first transfer window when the game starts. With a successful enough first season under your belt it could be possible to sign any of the big names in world football, meaning that the sky really is the limit with this one.

With a confirmed transfer budget for the first season of £200 million, and a squad where almost every position could use an upgrade in the next few years, this is as close to a blank slate as you're ever likely to see in a Football Manager game.
