For Honor Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

1. Combat Can Be Exhilarating Like Nothing Else

One of the greatest strengths of For Honor is you're never that sure of your abilities. You can have a game plan for given bout, have memorised a few attacks and know what to fall back on if you're immediately put on the back foot, but you'll always need to adapt to suit both the environment, and what said opponent actually throws at you.

Some classes simply perform better against others, and when you factor in the A.I. foot soldiers populating the world, what was once a one-on-one duel on the fringe of the map can see its 'round two' taking place amidst a sea of bodies.

Factor in the environmental effects, or the possibility that your team might be 'breaking' (meaning you need to survive or lose the match), and you've got a recipe for an in-the-moment feeling that'll have you watching your opponent's icons like a hawk.

In these moments, the glimmer of what For Honor can be - most likely through evolving as a franchise - comes through.

Across my 20 hours with the game, I had a number of times where after a battle I had to take a moment to 'come back down' - so enrapturing is its hold on you, when an entire team's victory hinges on you hitting the exact right buttons at the exact right time. And for that, ultimately, For Honor is a very good thing indeed.
