Gears Of War 4 Review: 7 Ups & 7 Downs

An entertaining but safe sequel.

After years and years of waiting, the first Gears of War game under a new developmental team, The Coalition, is finally here. It's also the first GoW title on the Xbox One, and while not without its myriad flaws, is at least another entertaining riff on the series' brutally violent, ultra-intense gameplay.

Hardcore fans in particular will find plenty to lap-up here, while casual players may be a little more measured in their praise, because after all, the ambition that one would expect from a generation-leaping Gears of War game really isn't here.

It is a difficult transition from old to new, and while one can see why this game shows awkward growing pains throughout, it at least promises that GoW5 will probably be a more confident and adventurous effort. If not, then rake them over the coals for their lack of effort.
