God of War: Ascension - 5 Reasons It's Awesome, 5 Reasons It Sucks

...5 Reasons It Sucks

5. Weaker Story

Ascension is, as you're surely aware by now, a prequel ahead of Kratos' war against Ares from the first game. It does have to be said that this is easily the weakest story of all the God of War games, and though the story has never exactly been a massive selling point, it starts to feel samey in this fourth major game, with plot points being recycled and everything becoming a little forgettable, to be honest. Part of the problem is the usual prequel issues; we meet a Kratos who is still a kick-ass soldier, but he's a lot less smart than in the temporally subsequent stories of the earlier games. Thus we have to willfully buy into the fact we're getting a "lesser" hero, which isn't really what anyone wants. Plus, the pacing is all over the place; the story will occasionally cut into the action to try and hurl some emotion at the player, but when we're back to ripping enemies' heads off two minutes later, it makes things feel tonally jarring to say the least.
