One of the biggest departures the new God of War has made from previous games is opting for a less linear main campaign. Adopting a semi open-world structure, the upcoming title will allow players to go off the beaten path and discover entire chunks of content that they'd otherwise miss by simply following the main story missions.

While many fans were skeptical about how substantial these side missions would be though, reviews have made it clear that not only are some of the best moments hidden away for fans to find, but the additional content is also integral in understanding the full story. One reviewer at IGN was particularly blown away by the secondary objectives, writing:

Those moments ā€“ where Iā€™d find myself traveling further than I set out to and in a surprisingly expansive world, no less ā€“ had me literally leaping out of my chair.

Not only does this extra content add an estimated 15 hours to the game's overall length, it contains major story beats that flesh out characters and plot points from the main narrative. Engaging in everything God of War has to offer then, rather than just following the main linear path as you would in earlier games, is essential in getting the most out of both the story and the gameplay.
