6. Payback (1999)
Mel Gibson stars in
Payback, a relatively enjoyable but somewhat sadistically violent crime thriller from 1999, as directed by Brian Helegland. The plot concerns a criminal named Porter, who is betrayed, shot and left for dead by his associates during an armed robbery. There's fun to be had with Payback, in the sense that it purposely evokes the grittiest '70s crime flicks, though it's safe to say that it doesn't really ever come together.
The Influence? Does that plot synopsis sound familiar, by any chance? It should do, given that it's the main premise behind
Grand Theft Auto III, which stars out in a similar fashion, with a criminal named Claude being shot and left for dead by his former associates during a robbery. Like Gibson's Porter, Claude sets out for some payback of his own - and there are some similarities there, too. Aside from the storylines, Claude's look and outfit seems to have also been modelled on Porter's.
