Guild Wars 2: 10 Reasons to Be Excited

4. World Versus World World versus World PvP in Guild Wars 2 is like a dream-come-true, really. If we could sit around and brainstorm all of the things that we would love to see in an epic open-world battle for strongholds and supplies - and money, time, and technology were not a factor in realizing all of our goals - it's hard to imagine that anyone could have come up with anything better than what ArenaNet has packed into the WvW content of Guild Wars 2! It's an ever-changing two-week-long battle for supremacy between three servers. There are keeps, castles, and towers all over a MASSIVE landscape, complete with lakes, rivers, mountains, and caves. Your server is like one huge team made up of many smaller units doing battle all throughout this world. You fight for control of the strongholds across the map, with the battle finally coming to an end after two weeks, after which your server will be matched against two more servers (judged for suitability of challenge using the previous rounds' stats as a guide). In theory, this might not be very novel, but - as with almost everything in Guild Wars 2 - it's the details that set this game apart. Your team wants to take that castle overlooking the lake, but the enemy has reinforced the door. They've been pouring boiling oil down on the guys manning the battering rams, and they unleashed a storm of mortar rounds on the guy from your squad who charged the barricade with the siege golem. Now you've got two other squads escorting a very valuable supply caravan that may help you turn the tide, while another group is trying to persuade the giants up in the hills to fight for your cause. A few minutes ago, though, one of your friends reported that he has found a secret underwater entrance to the keep that is not being guarded by the defenders. This could be the foothold you need to bring the fortifications down from the inside. It's at least worth a try while the others are building the trebuchets up on the hill in hopes of breaching the east wall. Sound exciting? That's the kind of dynamic siege warfare that Guild Wars 2 brings to the table. It's so rich and so compelling, that if World versus World mode was the only thing that made up Guild Wars 2, it would still be the most anticipated game of the year - and for very good reason!
