6. Open World Gameplay
Sandbox games and open worlds have worked absolute wonders for the Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Grand Theft Auto titles (you've probably read one of the 700 GTA V articles on this very site alone), so a Half Life game that's also open ended would be adding smooth gravy to that pile of beautiful mash. This one was actually rumoured earlier this year. It reveals how an anonymous tipster has confirmed that Half Life 3 may have role-playing elements, including NPCs and quests, drawing influence from Skyrim. You know Skyrim, don't you? The most successful Western RPG in existence? Yeah, that thing. While this is a slight departure from the FPS style we know and love in our Half Life games, an open world will create so much depth for the story. We will see just how deep it goes as we encounter people with their own backgrounds and motives. So whether or not the rumour is true, having a giant world for you to discover in Half Life 3 seems like the ultimate step to take the new instalment towards. So long as there's no stat building element. Seriously, give that thing a wide berth.
