Bringing back a long dormant franchise after over a decade of silence is no easy task, but Valve were ready to do so in conjunction with their new virtual reality platform, the Index. It took a good portion of the 2010s for the developer to put together and experiment with the new tech, slowly crafting a vision for their first VR title.

They saw this venture as a way to return to the Half-Life series, while also bringing new innovations to the gaming industry the same way they did with Half-Life one and Half-Life 2. It finally arrived in March this year.

As the first killer app for virtual reality headsets, Half-Life Alyx is a masterclass in designing for the advanced peripheral. It offers a wide range of control options to cater to every player, allows for a wide range of interactive elements and most importantly, maintains the high bar set by previous games.

Moreover, Half-Life: Alyx delivers what the fanbase had waited years for; a smart, well-written and revelatory story that accounts for the franchise's long absence and brings Valve roaring back into the single-player market. Where Valve goes with their Index next is anyone's guess, but Half-Life is sure to be
