The original Half-Life, a landmark achievement in gaming history, as well as the conclusion of the classic FPS genre. A seemingly ordinary day at work turns into a nightmare for Gordon and the Black Mesa team as the resonance cascade triggers an massive alien invasion from Xen.
Half-Life's greatest claim to fame was that it allowed to player to experience all of it through Gordon's eyes without any disruption from cut-scenes. It offered an unparalleled immersion that pushed the genre forward, not to mention being a pillar of gaming's advancement into full 3D.
With a campaign oozing with memorable moments, awesome weapons and creepy enemies to challenge the player, Half-Life was an instant classic. Just the way you start in the bowels of the Black Mesa facility and escalate into all-out war on the surface level was incredible to play through.
Valve's debut title remains easily the greatest of any developer starting out, the changes it brought to the genre paving the way for other franchises in the 2000s. It continues to resonate to this day, with its only blemish being some dated visuals and animations.
