Halo: Ranking Every Game From Worst To Best

8. Halo Wars

Halo Games
Microsoft

The original Halo Wars, while far from innovative as far as the real-time strategy genre goes (much like its sequel), was definitely a breath of fresh air in the context of being a part of the Halo lineup.

Fun fact: the original Halo was actually conceived as an RTS, but became a first-person shooter after Microsoft acquired Bungie. However, the original idea for the franchise would eventually get a proper release in the form of Halo Wars following the conclusion of the original Halo trilogy. And although it was still far from perfect as far as the genre goes, it did manage to be better than its eventual sequel.

It's still very simplistic as far as RTS gameplay goes, but was much more accessible to players who didn't usually partake in the genre, as commands are incredibly simple and easy to learn, especially in regards to the micromanaging, which, as stated before, Halo Wars 2 sort of dropped the ball on.

Plus, two of key elements that make Halo great are present and accounted for. Those being fun (skill-based) multiplayer and fantastic music. It's still not in the same league as the main series, especially since the story and cutscenes are noticeably lacking, but as far as non-FPS Halo titles go, Halo Wars is definitely the best.
