9. Why Did The Machines Start Killing People In Both Timelines?

It's said that people and machines were coexisting peacefully until about 5-10 years before the main plot starts. After all, the machines were designed by GAIA to make earth habitable, helping to create a balanced ecosystem that would allow for a rebirth of the life on Earth.

It was when GAIA's subordinate function and "kill-switch" HADES started corrupting them that the machines decided to turn against people. Why was the function activated? This is the question that needs to be answered by the sequel. Is it part of a bigger plan and we'e in for another reset, or did someone activate HADES for his or her personal interest?

While we're at it, what made Ted Faro's machines start malfunctioning in the first place and why the apocalypse happen?
