Horizon Zero Dawn: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

2. Movement Can Occasionally Feel Awkward (No Ledge Grab)

Before Horizon, Guerrilla had never developed any third-person action titles, so it's understandable for the most part that they weren't going to nail absolutely everything various other developers that specialise in such things, have honed over the years.

To that end, climbing is handled contextually, you can't climb anywhere. Instead, you'll either mantle onto bright yellow handholds, almost Mirror's Edge-style, or there'll be ledges with white chalk, denoting Aloy can grab ahold if you jump. If neither of these things are present, she'll just bounce off the wall/cliff/metal surface and fall, often to her death.

This is especially awkward when trying to climb the various vantage points or desert cliffs, as inside, you'll have to find the specific path the game wants you to follow, and outside, you'll end up 'Skyrim'ing' your way up or down a series of rocks, watching for Aloy's landing animation and jumping immediately before falling.

It's most annoying when trying to get out the way of any threatening enemies, as Aloy will just rub up against a ledge she could clearly grab, or will refuse to clamber out a body of water if the land is that little bit too high.
