InFamous: Second Son - 10 Reasons It's Dividing Opinion

2. Face Off

The facial detail and animations are stunning. We expected an improvement from the PS3 iterations, what was less expected was how these improvements may impact on our emotional involvement. It is so much harder to choose the 'evil' route when the character on your screen has a visual fidelity that shows every wrinkle, every micro-muscle movement, every fleeting expression. Humankind is fundamentally a communicative animal, and the most impactful communications are those that occur face to face, even in this world of internet communications with many battles being fought by anonymous keyboard warriors, visual contact is king. Why? Because that incredible computer called the brain is analysing in great depth every single muscle movement, every posture, every fleeting expression no matter how small. In fact communication experts understand that often the tiniest eye movement, postural or facial expression is that which carries the most important detail - even though the expressions and interpretations will all take place on a level below conscious thought (think Tim Roth in Lie To Me and you'll be in the right ball-park). What's jaw-dropping is that Sucker Punch have nailed it, and most people won't even notice, (reviews seem to have missed this aspect entirely), precisely because it does take place below a level of conscious thought. Start watching the cut scenes as if you were playing the part of Tim Roth and award yourself a pat on the back when you spot the micro-expressions that most people will miss. Allow yourself to be drawn into the excellent characterisation, this will increase your immersion in the story, and make some of the plot-holes and lack of sub-plots just that bit more forgiveable.
