Infamous: Second Son - 7 Reasons It's Sadly Not A System Seller

6. Enemy Variety

A real problem with inFAMOUS Second Son seems to be with the lacklustre enemy variety. There are pretty much two types of €˜baddies€™ for the majority of the game; DUP Agents and DUP Agents with concrete super powers. That€™s pretty much it for the majority of the game aside from one mission when flying angels attack you (as they do) and of course the €˜infamously€™ frequent drug bust side missions where a few drug dealers are thrown into the mix on pretty much every street corner (not such a great advert for the city after all?). In comparison, Cole McGrath€™s adventures in the previous games led him to encounter a wide variety of interesting and memorable enemies including huge monsters/beasts, ice creatures, standard military grunts, swamp monsters etc. The great thing about such variety was how each enemy needed players to actively change their play style to overcome such foes, promoting real variety in both gameplay and the way the super powers were used. Not only is the lack of enemies disappointing in inFAMOUS Second Son but the enemies that do exist are for some reason not fun to fight. Concrete-based enemies for the most part just seem really overpowered leading to frustrating sections where we would have to endure a grey screen (a sign players are low on health) for whole fight sequences which indirectly removes one of the games major selling points; that it looks visually amazing. In fact the enemy AI just seems far too accurate for playing on normal difficulty mode and most of Delsin€™s powers seem really ineffective against concrete enemies who don€™t appear to have any real weaknesses aside from players spamming shots at their foes for minutes upon end. Scenario€™s such as these sadly take away from players feeling like they are a hero with unimaginable super powers. Lastly boss fights in Second Son are generally just an uninspired experience without any real payoff or variety. At least the previous games had some iconic, epic memorable showdowns such as the final fight with Kessler or finally having the power to take down the Beast in inFAMOUS 2. Second Son on the other hand is severely lacking in entertaining boss fights as most follow the same pattern of dodge, shoot, repeat and ultimately go on for far too long.
