4. Confusion Between Two Ongoing Productions

Ever since the show’s announcement, there was a lot of mistrust from fans about the Resident Evil Netflix show. Rather than show its prospective audience gnarly monsters or something to set the horror-inspired mood, Netflix leaned into the idea that the show had family drama elements.

Lingenfelser described the first cast photo shown on social media as a “nail in the coffin”. A fan of the video games, he had already told his colleagues in the production company that “this is going to be a hard sell” after reading the scripts. Naturally, fans were concerned about the show’s direction. Putting aside the racial hate that the diverse cast received, audience felt that the mood was entirely teenage drama and no post-apocalyptic horror-thriller to be seen.

Moreover, just months after the reveal of the cast, Constantin was bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen with Welcome to Racoon City. This created a lot of confusion between audiences, with two productions based on the same brand building hype at once.

Lingenfelser mused that Constantin Film could’ve done a better job separating the marketing and it’s hard to disagree. He regretted the choice of the word “adaptation” for the show, which should have been used exclusively for the movie (that was roughly following the events for the first two games) and wished that his superiors had been clearer that the Netflix show was an “alternative universe” show.

Showrunner Andrew Dabb’s comments that the games were "canon to the show" certainly caused a stir with diehard fans who saw several plot holes in that idea immediately.
