Last Of Us 2: 12 Tips & Tricks The Game Doesn't Tell You
8. Upgrading A Near-Broken Melee Weapon Will Reset All Pips
Last of Us 2 might have the most brutally effective melee weapons in all of gaming. Machetes getting buried in shoulders, wrenches meeting eye sockets - clearly Naughty Dog wanted to make a point about human on human violence, and it comes across in every swing.
Carrying over from the first game, you can eventually find a training manual on the main story path that will unlock the ability for Ellie to upgrade these items, too.
See, weapons all have "pips" (denoting one auto-kill each), but you'll want to upgrade a near-broken weapon rather than a new one. This way, the upgrade completely refills all base pips, AND adds the additional ones.
Use your base weapon on as many foes as possible, then upgrade to get the most out of it.
