Mario Kart 8: 6 Reasons It's Game Of The Year So Far
5. It's Not Scared To Be Innovative
While the game is one of the more nostalgic experiences of recent years - and rightly so - it is undoubtedly still a new creature. Some reviewers have gone as far as to say that the new elements are too much of a removal from the tried and tested Mario Kart formula, and while some of the issues relating to Battle Mode are pretty hard to argue with (it's a step backwards to not have custom made arenas) the over-whelming majority of the gameplay tweaks are to the benefit of the game. The streamlined online mode in particular is a revelation, and the change in gameplay experience from casual, fun-based racing to high-octane, controller-smashing frustration is a real bonus, and credit is due to the developers for setting the foundation for an online mode that adds an entirely different dynamic to the game. In terms of specific new features, there are new weapons, a new zero gravity race mode and of course the gamepad integration that swerves the temptation to over-complicate gameplay in favour of a simple, smart mechanic that doesn't distract from play.
