Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 12 Tips & Tricks The Game Doesn't Tell You

1. How Coins & The Unlock System Works

After only a couple of races, you'll start noticing how the game appears to randomly dole out "You unlocked a new item!"-style rewards. Although that very same prompt tells you how many coins you have in total to get said item, there's more under the hood to keep track of.

Firstly, how do you get coins, and how many gets you which item?

Well, coins aren't a given amount awarded at the close of a race - it's the literal amount you've collected from the tracks themselves while racing, or ones you've got from power-up boxes.

Second, the specific item rewards themselves are randomised, but the game modulates them based on different 'tiers'.

First you'll get something for every 30 coins to a maximum of 450, to which the gap widens to 50 until you hit 1500. After this, it goes to 100 per item, until you hit the maximum of 3100. Again, your total coin count is a running total from every pickup inside a race, so even getting coins from an item box shouldn't be that much of a letdown anymore.
