Marvel's Avengers: 5 Major Concerns Square Enix Must Address
There's plenty of reason to be optimistic about Crystal Dynamic's game, but concern as well...
After such a long wait for a proper reveal of Crystal Dynamic's Avengers game, the showing at the Square Enix was really... disappointing.
The footage shown to the public was short and made mainly up of slightly last-gen looking CG, with only a select few members of the media being shown a behind closed doors gameplay demo. The response to this demo has been overwhelmingly positive in comparison to the actual reveal, making many utterly confused as to why Square Enix did not lead with this gameplay.
Yes, there's still plenty of cause to be excited, but the reveal hasn't exactly inspired confidence across the board. Concerns surrounding aesthetics, gameplay and the purported live service model have all emerged in the week since the first trailer for Marvel's Avengers dropped, and it's clear that while there's still plenty of time left until the game launches, fans are going in with a lot of worries.
Thanks to Square not showing off this gameplay and their focus on the game being a live service during the reveal, there are quite a few concerns that have arisen surrounding the game. Here are the biggest...
5. The Costumes Don't Work
If you've been following Marvel's Avengers since the initial announcement then you must have already at some point thought that some of the Avengers' costumes look bad, or at the very least heard others expressing similar sentiments.
It's obvious what Crystal Dynamics are trying to do with with certain costumes, for instance Captain America. The blend of Cap's classic American flag look and a more realistic military one is an interesting concept, but the execution is somewhat lacking. Likewise, the same could be said for Thor, his armour clearly being inspired by that of Roman centurions, but, again, this doesn't work particularly well.
Ant-Man has stolen Wonder Man's jacket, and Iron Man's faceplate looks a bit off. Overall, the costumes just aren't fantastic.
In regards to the faces of the characters, people have expressed the same distaste, though, seeing as the faces of these heroes change every time a new artist draws them in the comics, this concern seems a little unfounded; the game isn't trying to emulate the MCU, and that's a good thing.
Anyway, while the outfits of the Avengers may not be the most important element of making a fun game, having to look at such unsightly costumes for numerous hours could end up really detracting from the experience. As of now there are no plans to change the costumes (which hopefully at least means less crunch for the developers), so the alternate outfits really need to be something special.
