N7 is a vocational code from the human military, signifying special forces trained to the highest level of proficiency. Shepard was one of the soldiers granted the N7 insignia, and it has been confirmed that the protagonist of the next game will also have the same honour. The main character's connection to N7 carries with it a number of interesting connotations and possibilities. With hints that Mass Effect 4 will be taking place in an entirely different galaxy, there's the question of what an N7 member is doing that far afield. Some have speculated that the plot of Mass Effect 4 might entail a search for other galactic life or new worlds for colonisation, following the devastation of the Reapers.
