Mass Effect 4: 10 Ways It Can Revolutionise The Franchise
7. Focus Less On Shooting Things
The first Mass Effect was a solid combination of third-person shooter and RPG elements with a lot of room for improvement. But with each new installment the RPG aspects became shallower in favor for visceral combat. While the improvements to combat were a welcome addition, its emphasis over the RPG elements were not. And the series suffered in many areas as a result. To be clear, Mass Effect should continue being a third-person shooter, and effort should certainly be made to improve upon the shooting mechanics with each new entry. But while Mass Effect has always been a shooter, that has also always arguably been the least interesting aspect of the series. Mass Effect fans dont play the games for just the action; there are countless titles that do action better. Mass Effect is known for its world building, atmosphere, story, and characters. Those are the qualities that draw people to the series. Frankly, the next game could use a little less shooting and more emphasis on these qualities. While shooting should not be thrown out, more diversity with mission types would be welcome. Emphasis should be placed on exploration, lore, and characters. Instead of being the main game mechanic, action and shooting should just be one of many core mechanics. Some missions should require shooting, while others shouldnt require you to even touch a gun. Essentially, rather than be content as just a third-person shooter, the next Mass Effect should combine many diverse game types as a means of building a compelling narrative driven world for the player to experience.
