It's very hard to get away from the notion of escaping the past trilogy both in a real-world sense, and in the game's canon, so user TBroadhurst has theorised another way to move humankind away from the Citadel in a particularly interesting way. They go with the idea that all the minds working for the Council must've put in place an escape plan, sending out a handful of scout ships as far out as possible when the Reaper invasion was first discovered. Comprised entirely of EDI A.I. programs and Geth members (assumedly going with the idea that an understanding was reached, as oppose to ME1's storyline where they were our initial antagonists), these ships could then journey for as long as necessary without the need for sustenance. The idea is that the majority of these scout ships perish over the course of many lightyears out in the abyss regardless, until the one your character is on lands and begins anew on an unknown planet. The ship you were on contains embryos and other means to kickstart a new civilisation, but the key part is you're completely unaware of the hazards surrounding you, nor the other races or what the galaxy itself holds within. Broadhurst ends his idea saying that eventually you'd figure out the means to travel again, and therein would be the signature pull of Mass Effect; assembling your crew and heading off to see what you could find.
