After almost a decade of fans wondering what the hell was going on with access to the original Mass Effect trilogy, EA and Bioware finally greenlit the Legendary Edition of the mythos, late 2020.

Suddenly, the questions flooded in. Was this going to be a ground-up overhaul like Activision and Capcom's recent slew of remakes, or more of a remastering, where textures get reworked but the "meat" of the experience - the feel of the game - remains the same?

Well, a bit of both.

I was lucky enough to sit down with Bioware as part of a livestream gameplay reveal and conversation on the Legendary Edition, with the results being fascinating for longtime fans.

I'll get into all the major takeaways, but first off it's worth knowing that the Project Director here is Mac Walters, a veteran who's been involved with the franchise since the original game. Walters noted in the discussion that he and the team somewhat had "developer angst" coming off those original titles, as they only became better creators over time, and knew what aspects could be further improved.

Thus, the Legendary Edition is a "passion project" through and through, and where Bioware have chosen to apply their focus is fascinating.
