Metal Gear Solid Remake: 10 Things That Must Remain Untouched

8. The Opening

If a game is truly special, you'll know it from the very first scene. The opening cutscene sees Snake arrive at Shadow Moses Island with the help of an SDV (Swimmer Delivery Vehicle) while the Colonel outlines his mission - to rescue two hostages and gather information about the terrorists' nuclear launch capabilities. Set to a suitably haunting soundtrack, it sets the mood for the game incredibly well. Your first steps into Metal Gear Solid see you avoiding a couple of guards while waiting for an elevator to arrive so you can make your way to the surface. It's a neat way to introduce you to the game's stealth mechanics without throwing you in at the deep end. It also demonstrates the numerous possibilities created by the game's 3D stealth gameplay; you can simply wait and hide under a metal structure or, with a bit of foresight, you can run straight down to the elevator and wait for its arrival behind a wall. Once on the elevator, Snake strips off his underwater gear and reveals his mullet and stealth suit look for the first time. The game's title appears above him and he emerges above ground in the snow covered island of Shadow Moses; introductions don't get much more iconic than this.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
