Bear in mind that the guide does not explicitly state which version of Big Boss is "active" at the end of the game: Ahab or the "real" Big Boss. Anyway, the game climaxes with Skullface's vocal chord-mutating parasite infecting Big Boss' Mother Base, causing Big Boss to kill all of his soldiers in order to prevent the parasite spreading and infecting the world at large. Apparently the event significantly scars Big Boss, making him reveal his "inner demon", consumed by the game's events and transforming him into the villain he is later notorious as. As some online have already noted, it might make sense for the game to end with a sudden shift of perspective: what if the real Big Boss returns and murders the player character Ahab? It would make for a shocking and dramatic turn to cement Big Boss' legacy despite Kojima's devilish bait-and-switch. In short, don't expect an ending as neat and vaguely hopeful as MGS4's.
