Metal Gear Solid: Ranking The Boss Battles

26. Vulcan Raven €“ Metal Gear Solid

The Context: Snake has almost succeeded in reaching Metal Gear but crosses paths again with Vulcan Raven for one final confrontation; it's also a battle that is home to one of the franchises most infamous quotes.
"In nature there is no such thing as boundless slaughter, there is always an end to it. But you, Snake, are different. The paths you walk on have no end, each step you take is paved with the corpses of your enemies. Their spirits will haunt you forever. You shall have NO peace!"
The Fight: Putting it bluntly, it's essentially the same style of fight as The Fury from Metal Gear Solid 3, only with a gatling gun and from a top-down perspective. All it really boils down to is hiding behind the various walls of the freezer room while popping out occasionally with your missile launcher. It's safe to say that Raven - while an awesome character - has far more interesting dialogue than actual fights.

25. The Fear €“ Metal Gear Solid 3

The Context: Big Boss is ambushed in the jungle and shot with some of The Fear's trademark poisonous darts. Similar to The Fury, the actual character isn't that memorable - he's a lunatic with a crossbow - but this is where the actual boss battles for Metal Gear Solid 3 get interesting on this list. The Fight: First off, like almost every battle in the game lethal means aren't necessary; as a matter of fact trying to tranquillise the bosses into submission is far more challenging and interesting. So instead of popping The Fear with an endless barrage of AK-47 bullets you can capture poisonous frogs around the area and hide them, causing The Fear to eventually eat them to replenish his stamina meter provided you'd plugged him with some tranquilliser rounds beforehand. Instead of replenishing his stamina though, it just gets drained further, subsequently giving you an even easier win. In addition to the creativity behind the fight, it's simply entertaining fighting a freaky limb-flailing psychopath that freely hops around between jungle trees like The Joker on a holiday trip.

24. Volgin (Round 1) €“ Metal Gear Solid 3

The Context: After planting some C4 explosives on the Shagohod, Big Boss has a run-in with this electricity-manipulating madman. Volgin is additionally one multi-layered character; he's a homosexual seeking world domination - and a fan of torturing others with his thunderous abilities. The Fight: For starters, a little-known trick is to don the mask of Raikov - Volgin's lover - as he'll cartoonishly fall under a spell thinking that it's really him. Furthermore, it also allows a nice opportunity to get some cheap shots in. Past that however it's an average and standard boss battle of dodging electricity-based attacks whilst shooting him with either lethal or non-lethal weapons. The only real X-factor is the time limit before an explosion, but even that can be ignored.
