Years since the first game's release, DICE's tumultuous prequel/reboot to the Mirror's Edge saga is finally nearing its way to completion - though it's fair to say they've been a bit skimpy on the details. Since its gameplay reveal at this year's E3, Catalyst has wowed audiences with its refining of the (at times) jagged free running formula of its predecessor, and is already showing that the relatively new IP has some of the best untapped potential for something truly magnificent. Indeed, Catalyst already seems to bear the markings of a high quality title; it has a charming protagonist in Faith, a mesmerising and unique open world to be explored in the City of Glass, and an intriguing plot that redefines the series' established canon - not bad for a first sequel, eh? The City of Glass is the heart of the corporatist dystopia Faith finds herself in, and DICE have gone above and beyond to make it one of the most visually striking of locales to feature on the newest line of consoles. Further still, combat is being redefined to suit what Mirror's Edge is all about, and free-running never looked quite this good either. All in all it's looking as though Catalyst will be the game that the first title should've been first time round, and despite the relatively little we know about it, there's still enough info to consolidate and really set the hype train in motion. Any way you look at it, Faith's return has been long overdue.
WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well.
In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
