As it's always been in Mortal Kombat, when you've beaten your opponent into a bloody pulp and won the match, the announcer calls out "FINISH HIM!" and you are given an opportunity to tap in a secret combination of buttons to gruesome Fatality move. These have been a staple of the series from the very start and should you get the fatality combination right, you were treated to all sorts of disgusting mutilation of your opponent, the most famous of which (and the one that scared conservative types 20 years ago) was Scorpion's move that had him tearing the head from his opponent's shoulders and bringing the whole spine with it. So with MKX, be happy in the knowledge that if you get that combination right you can eviscerate characters in a whole new stack of ways and the gameplay trailer makes a point of showcasing a few of them for us. As a brief rundown, we have Sub Zero firing ice through a torso, stripping the flesh and organs out then reaching in and breaking the spine with his hands. Others show Sub Zero's head being eaten away by some form of pestilence, Ferra being thrown at D'Vorah and piercing her skull with two knives (bonus for the X-ray view on that one), a character tearing out someone's heart and drinking the blood from it and the best/worst of the bunch, Scorpion hurling a fireball through Sub Zero's stomach and the camera zooming down to the gaping hole just as Sub Zero's heart drops from where it should be. Suffice it to say, the fatalities are all suitably brutal, incredibly violent and gloriously over the top, which is exactly how they should be. Mortal Kombat has always revelled in it's minimal grip on reality, biology and physics and this brief glimpse we've been given into how the tenth game is going to look and work is something to be very excited about. Fans of the franchise and fans of fighting games in general should be over the moon at the prospect of a new MK game and as we all spend the next year or so patiently waiting for the fighting genre to get the shot in the arm it needs, take comfort in the fact that MKX is going to be fantastic.
