Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot: 8 Things We Need To See
1. Fatalities (Within Reason)
Speaking of the violence, there is little else more iconic to the identity of Mortal Kombat than those two immortal words... "Finish Him!"
Like violence in general, fatalities have been by-passed in every on-screen adaptation, an potentially for good reason. Perhaps the old ripped-off-head-with-dangling-spine move would compromise the clarity of a movie in a big way.
Or perhaps there is a happy medium to be found between these moves and not sacrificing the believability of the world. Death moves such as scaring the opponent's ghost from their body, dropping a Mortal Kombat arcade machine on their head, or morphing into a clown and shooting them in the face probably would look silly. But maybe some of the more visceral and physically viable death moves could enter the fray, and embroider the existing intensity to satisfying effect.
Should fatalities be the reboot's only USP? Absolutely not. But without them, it just ain't Mortal Kombat. And seeing as how this may be Hollywood's final attempt at realising the personality of these classic games, consideration should be taken into how fatalities can be brought to life on screen.
