For all 2K's talk of "being the story", the most immediate problem with this year's MyCareer mode is the fact that you're forced into a pre-written background. Whether you like it or not, you're forced to play as Frequency 'Freq' Vibrations, a good-natured Brooklyn kid played by a single specific voice actor. You have a pair of loving parents, a twin sister, a girlfriend, and an outspoken best friend. It quickly becomes apparent that you're not the driving force behind the story at all; Spike Lee is. Characters refer to you as 'Freq' regardless of your actual in-game name (apparently it's a pre-birth nickname based on your tendency to kick in the womb), and over 90 minutes of cutscenes are already mapped out in advance. 'Be The Story' is perhaps the most misleading tagline in sports-gaming history. You're playing a pre-determined character as much as you would in a Grand Theft Auto game.
