It's not too outrageous to assume that the focus of an NBA game should be the basketball itself, but Spike Lee seems to have been so determined to concentrate on everything else instead. Your NBA career takes a firm backseat to the highs and lows of off-court life. As well as family and friends, "Freq" must juggle the pressures of marketing opportunities, the potential pitfalls of fame, and a slew of money-grabbing hangers-on. Lee jams a long cutscene into the game after every one of your rookie-season games (of which there aren't many; again, more on that later), and seems to have been blinded by his desire to tell a compelling story. It's no exaggeration to say that MyCareer mode feels more like a movie than a game most of the time - and that's not a compliment.
