NBA 2K19 Review: 6 Ups & 2 Downs

6. A More Strategic Approach To Offence
As a series, NBA 2K has typically veered away from arcadey stylings, opting for a more realistic basketball simulation instead. Its gameplay isn't complex to the point of inaccessibility, but mastering its more advanced mechanics takes time, and this year's incarnation favours a more strategic approach.
This is largely down to a handful of changes on the offensive end. For the most park, 2K19 rewards greater care and attention when in possession, encouraging players to turn themselves into mini floor generals. Tighter defences mean points are harder to come by, and it pays to take your time on offence, run plays, and learn what works, rather than exploiting the same handful of moves. On top of this, the retooled shot meter allows great precision and accuracy all-round, though timing shots on simple lay-ups takes some getting used to.
Slashing isn't as overpowered as it was last year, and 2K18 players will be forced to slow their approach. On the flipside, 2K19's post game probably needs nerfed, as draining buckets from such situations is all too easy, leaving the Javale Magees of the world looking like Hakeem Olajuwon.
These welcome tweaks aren't an overhaul, but they represent a significant step forward from 2K18, particularly for those favouring a more methodical approach.
