Netflix's Castlevania Review: 4 Ups And 1 Down

3. Fidelity to Source Material

Castlevania III Dracula's Curse
Konami

Castlevania is based on the 1990 video game Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. The in-game narrative informs the gamer that Dracula simply cursed Europe and is currently taking it over with his armies, country after country. The one man that can stop him is Trevor Belmont. He's an outsider, as black magic is frowned upon by the townspeople. With the aid of three allies, Trevor faces off against the almighty vampire.

This is the story of the Netflix's series as well, albeit with a different antagonist - here the Church is the enemy. Apart from that, it's a pretty successful adaptation of the game, in which the narrative was rather minimal. If you've spent numerous hours playing various entries in the franchise you shouldn't be disappointed with the series, as the creators treat the source material with respect and dignity. Castlevania expands upon the idea of the original and gives it much needed depth. Therefore the series can stand as proof that a flawed, but still well executed adaptation of a video game is possible.
