Ostensibly a gimmick but admittedly very fun once you accept there's still a part of you that has a figure itch to be scratched, the whole 'toys to life' genre was kickstarted in earnest once Nintendo's Amiibos got involved.

To that end, Ninty have confirmed the sales of Amiibo figures are overwhelmingly positive, shifting over 50 million figures in a given year, as of April 2016.

It's very likely then, that not only will the NX have an NFC (near-field communication) sensor built in with the console to allow for 'backwards compatibility' on your established collection, but also to encourage everyone else to start collecting, too. After all, although Disney Infinity is no more thanks to the company making far too many figures at once and tanking their suppliers, LEGO Dimensions and Skylanders prove that when gameplay is tied to figures directly, it can make for a huge success.

Granted, at the minute, Amiibos tend to exist more as collectibles than anything else, but with the social app Miitomo already encouraging a wider social engagement with fans, you can bet Amiibo-triggered accessories and/or minigames will be a huge part of the revamped Miiverse.
