Nintendo Wii U: 10 Reasons You Need To Get One

2. Nintendo Seems To Understand Innovation

While this bulletpoint may be proven wrong by the time E3 rolls around, one of the reasons to buy into the Wii U is that it seems to understand the concept of "next-gen." Many seem to think that "next-gen" is synonymous with "better graphics," and that is the thinking that has me less than thrilled to hear about Sony and Microsoft's next consoles.

So far, the Wii U has not proven that it can generate better visuals than either the Xbox 360 or the PS3, but that's perfectly fine with me. When I think "next-gen," I look for new ways to play games, and to be frank, it's impossible to deny Nintendo as a forerunner for innovation. The Wii incorporated simple motion controls into gaming so that anyone could pick up a controller and play.

Yes, Sony and Microsoft had their versions, but Playstation Move is an experiment that should be forgotten as quickly as possible, and Kinect, while allowing for some of the best dancing and fruit-slicing games I've ever played, doesn't have any of the charming or unique games Wii did. The DS gave us a true two-screen experience in handheld gaming while also successfully incorporating touch controls, allowing for new ways to play. The Vita took the idea of a touchscreen and doubled it, but hasn't seemed to find a good reason for the technology.

I've already explained how Wii U changes how I play games, but based off of the rumors and the way Sony and Microsoft conduct their business, I don't see them doing much to out-innovate Nintendo without coming off as an act of plagiarism.

With all of this being said, I am not bashing the 360 or PS3, as I am a happy owner of both. I'd also like to say that everything I'm going off of in this point is purely speculation and rumor. In a year's time (hopefully we'll see their new systems by then), I'll be singing a different tune. But for right now, I'm happy with the creative risks that Nintendo has taken.
