Nintendo's Next Console: 10 Ways To Blow Switch Out The Water
9. Customisable Home Screen Options
While the Switch's home screen must be admired for its sleep simplicity, it looks a bit dull. This is especially embarrassing given the 3DS (and even 12-year-old DSi) doing much better jobs at creating fun and customisable home screens.
Making the homepage customisable (beyond a simple black or white background) will make for a more rounded console experience, and help players feel a sense of ownership to their console. Files, like those introduced in earlier handhelds, can help organise pretty clunky home screens, too.
But Nintendo shouldn't stop at mere functionality, and can look back at previous consoles to see how they can improve the game select screen.
Whatever happened, for instance, to the Mii plaza? The popularity of Animal Crossing New Horizons shows just how much players enjoy simply virtually hanging out; implementing more interactive features into Switch's successor's home screen will make it a more dynamic place to be, and make turning on the console feel like more of an event.
Given the surge in interest in retro gaming in recent years, Nintendo could even give the option of customising the home screen to match one from their consoles' past.
