Not Another WWII FPS: 10 Neglected Eastern Front Battles To Consider

2. Battle Of Vienna

VINN It might not be a matter on which there is much of a concord, but I for one feel that Berlin has been done to death. Having the clash spaced out over multiple missions in World At War robbed it of some of its pace and grandeur, and got especially incredulous when the protagonist should certainly have been killed at multiple points (*cough* flooded train station *cough*). Besides, it€™s fair to say that everyone knows of the epic final clash at this point, and a shift to the concurrent action around the southern capital of annexed Austria would be exciting. The Soviets entered the besieged city primarily from the south and east at first before breaking into the west and north. Like its northern counterpart, Vienna also saw fierce urban combat between hardened Red Army troops and ad hoc volunteer units, which ended the way one would expect. In the western suburbs, there was fierce fighting for control of the main railway station, whilst the bridges over the Danube River were alternately dominated and destroyed by the opposing armies. Like many other German urban centres, much of the famed city was rubble when it was finally overwhelmed on a coincidental Friday 13th. In terms of gameplay, the main clash with the II SS Panzer Corps and the street fighting would make for the most obvious enticements. The major transport hubs could form objectives, as indeed they did, as could the seizing of bridges over the river. The primary point being that Berlin was far from the only major battleground in April 1945; the other stories are no less deserving of exposure.
