5. Backwards Compatibility Completely Virtualised?
Earlier this month, EA's chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen warned that the next generation of games consoles are
unlikely to be backwards-compatible with existing titles which caused great alarm in the gaming community. The thought of having the entire back catalogue of PlayStation games rendered completely useless led to many taking to forums across the Internet voicing their dismay at the news. However,
it has since been reported that the PlayStation 4 will be backwards compatible with PS3 titles thanks largely to its purchase of Gaikai, and its cloud gaming services. It is being suggested that backwards compatibility on the PS4 could be completely virtualised through a streaming service which transfers the game straight onto the console, disc-free, though the downside to that is the prospect of having to re-purchase all your PS3 games as digital copies on the new system. Still, we think it's better than nothing.
