PlayStation 5: 8 Rumours & Details You Need To Know
4. Backwards Compatibility Is Looking Likely
Unlike Microsoft, Sony's appeared to almost fight against offering PlayStation owners the chance to revisit some of their favourite classics of yesteryear, preferring instead to rest its gaze on the future and beyond, but just how much of the lack of backwards compatibility for the PS4 comes down to an inability, rather than consumer disinterest, to offer such a service?
Sure, it's sitting comfortably at the top of the food chain in 2018, but during the PlayStation 3 era, Sony was suffering to keep up with the Xbox 360. Not only did its price tag turn many off, but its obtuse architecture meant developing games for the console was a nightmare, to say the least.
It'd be disingenuous to say the PS3 had no exclusives worth justifying the implementation of backwards compatibility for PS4, but it certainly trailed behind Sony's winning streak this time around.
With the PS4's architecture circling back to using industry standard hardware and a slew of stellar exclusives, Sony would be mad not to provide the option for PS5.
Thankfully, the combination of several low-key events has led many to suspect that Sony is well aware of the demand for backwards compatibility and is actively looking at ways to implement it for PS5.
Good stuff.
