9. Renegade Ops
Described by IGN's Damon Hatfield as "a top-down Just Cause" (handy, being it's developed by the same team), if you're a sucker for basic premises and high-octane, visually-satisfying explosions, Renegade Ops is exactly that. Literally just throwing you into one of the most basic premises of them all (essentially 'evil dudes need stopping, here's some guns'), this sort of thing lives and dies by its control scheme - which is impeccable. Bounding about through desert and jungle-filled landscapes feels immediately rewarding (think Halo's Warthog-levels of bounce on some of the larger vehicles), which only factors into producing a massive grin on your face when you barrel right through an enemy camp in a blur of bullets and gasoline. The upgrades are plentiful, there's bucketloads of charm in delivering a 80s throwback action-romp and the whole thing is held together with a solid framerate and robust animation. If a pixellated aesthetic was putting you off any of the more recent top-down shooters, Renegade Ops is exactly what you've been looking for.
