Pokémon: 10 Weirdest Evolution Methods

9. Rockruff To Dusk Form Lycanroc

There are plenty of Pokémon whose evolution is based on the time of day. Certain creatures are only able to evolve in the day, others can only evolve during the night, and a certain few fall under both categories.

If Rockruff reaches level 25 during the day, the trainer is rewarded with the Midday Form Lycanroc, yet if this occurs during the night, the result is the Midnight Form Lycanroc. While this is not completely unique to this species of Pokémon, since it is similar to Eevee's evolution into Espeon and Umbreon, it is certainly rare.

What does put Rockruff in a league of its own is its evolution into Dusk Form Lycanroc. Some players of Ultra Sun and Moon were gifted a special Rockruff with the Own Tempo ability. If this creature reaches level 25 between 5.00 and 5.59pm, Lycanroc's Dusk Form appears.

This is an incredibly specific timeframe for an evolution to occur, and it may be difficult for trainers to time this perfectly in order to avoid the other two forms. There is of course the trick of strategically changing the time setting on the Nintendo 3DS which, though may be seen as cheating the game slightly, would be worth doing to guarantee Lycanroc's rarest form.
