One of the most common complaints that come with each new generation is “wow, when did they start basing Pokemon on inanimate objects instead of plants and animals?! They must be running out of ideas!”

While that’s kind of silly at face value (news flash: there are a whole heck of a lot of different species of plants and animals out there and they could easily make an entire generation based on new living things if they wanted), the fact of the matter is that there have always been a whole lot of Pokemon based on random objects, ranging from rocks to sludge to Pokeballs.

Magnemite clearly falls into that category as well and while that’s completely fine it’s unclear what, exactly, it’s supposed to be.

A metallic sphere adorned with a pair of magnets, a bunch of screws and a huge, haunting eyeball, it’s anyone’s guess as to what Game Freak’s inspiration was. Though its eventual Electric/Steel typing and Sturdy ability made it a powerful addition to any party, it’s tough to make the argument that this Pokemon is better-designed than Comfey or Castform.
