Pokémon Sun & Moon: 10 Exciting New Things You Can Do
1. Alolan Forms
Regional Vairants could be a mechanic we see in many, many games to come as a means to redesign and retool Pokemon to not only fit in with the regional aesthetic, but to gain new life and fix some of the weakness and mould that’s grown on them over the years.
In Sun & Moon you get Alolan Forms of at least 15 Pokemon from the first generation, all with new looks, types and abilities, including the infamous long-necked Exeggutor that is now somehow a dragon (somewhere, in the distance, you can hear a Charizard shedding a tear).
Alolan Forms also help to keep laying it on with that unique feel and vibrancy for the Alola region. The aforementioned Exeggutor appropriately looks like a tropical plant, while Diglett and Dugtrio have clearly been taking glorious grooming tips from Fabio for the new games. Raichu surfs on its own tail, Raticate is now more pampered gerbil than diseased rodent, and Marowak is now part luau, part that scene it starred in in Pokemon Origins I don’t want to talk about for fear of further heartbreak.
After 20 years, a lot of these Pokemon needed the refresh to stop from getting stale alongside nearly 800 fellow pocket monsters that have managed to keep up with the state of the game better. It remains to see how the variants will stand up now they’ve been reinvigorated, but the almost fan-art like variations to them have been a lot of fun to see unveiled.
Here’s to hoping it’ll be even more fun to catch ‘em all, all over again.
